 Introduction

     The ozone layer has recovered by itself in 2020 in arctic region. This is the good news for the world in this pandemic situation. But i clearly tell you that this recovery is not due to the effect of lock-down due to corona disease in all over the world. Lets start today's topic with basic concepts of ozone layer.


What is ozone Layer?

  • The ozone layer is the layer of triple bonded oxygen atom in the stratosphere around 6 to 9 miles away from surface. 


  • The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the french physicist Charles Fabry and  Henry Buisson. 
  • this layer absorbs the 97 to 99% of sun's medium frequency ultraviolet light,which otherwise damage the life on earth. 
  • united nation general  assembly has designed September 16 as the International Day for preservation of the ozone layer.                                               
       
  • At the ground level, Ozone layer is pollutant and harmful for the earth. It is also called tropospheric ozone. This is one of the component of photochemical smog. This bad ozone can damage to tissue in plants and animals due to high oxidising power. Breathing this smog can lead to chestpain coughing, asthma etc. Health problems. That's we can say ozone is good if present at height and bad if present in ground level
Ozone layer hole and arctic region
  • Ozone layer hole is not the real hole in the atmosphere but it is the region where the atmosphere have less amount of the ozone or thin ozone layer.                                 

  • the first ozone hole discovered by british scientist in may, 1985 which was first published on magazine 'nature'.
  • the scientists of the CAMS [Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service] announced the biggest hole formed in arctic region in February 2020. It is spread in 1 million sq. km area. The CAMS provide information of air pollution, solar energy, greenhouse gas, climate changing etc. 
  • every year big ozone layer hole creates in spring season in Antarctica. It is because the sunlight first time enters in that region after winter season of 6 month. 
Why ozone layer depletes is larger in 2020

       ozone layer around arctic region [north pole] depletes in larger area. Scientist reported that due to some unusual conditions, freezing temperature and other climatic factors in the stratosphere of the arctic region the ozone layer depletes more in 2020. Canada, Greenland, Russia, Alaska and arctic ocean is main parts of the hole. this is second time last decade. before this hole, in 2011 larger ozone hole was noticed by scientists and one more time in Feb. 2020 this happen.   

 "By the end of polar winter, first sunlight over north pole initiated this unusually strong depletion causing hole. It's size is small compared to ozone hole in southern pole." Report said.

      
How it closed itself ?

 Ozone hole in arctic region closed it self in 2020. This is not the effect of lockdown by which pollution reduce to some points. But this ozone layer closed by the phenomenon called polar vortex. The scientists get to know that from 2000 ozone hole started close at rate of 1-2% per decade.

 
   POLAR VORTEX :- 
 
 The larger area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds both of earth's pole. Polar vortex  always exist on the pole. But it is typically weak during the winter season and strong in summer season. 
The wind flow in circular direction from east to west or anti-clockwise. The speed of wind is approximately 150 Miles per hour. 
 
 When the polar vortex is stong,  it flow in one circle not in two or more.  below the picture show the polar vortex in summer.

 When it is winter time. The strong polar vortex divides into two or more circles and become weak. The picture shown below shows the polar vortex in winter.

      Thus when polar vortex become strong the ozone hole starts repairing itself due to good environment condition. We can see the positive effect of lockdown in our atmosphere, but the repairs of ozone layer is only due to polar vortex. But it is good news for us in such pandemic year.
